Health & Habit

INTRODUCTION

‘Good’ health - is often determined by the type of 'lifestyle' an individual ‘chooses’ to adopt.  What an individual chooses to eat - how one chooses to spend their time – how you think – the list goes on – these all have impact on the quality of your 'health' and 'lifestyle.'

It can often be overlooked – the power that we have, to ‘create’ a 'lifestyle' that we desire – particular when it comes to adopting ‘healthy practices.’  What do we mean by ‘healthy practices?’ – We mean – any ‘practice’ or ‘behaviour’ that will add ‘value’ to your life and thus, enable you to reach an optimum of 'health' and 'wellbeing.'

HABITS - DEFINITION

Habits are behaviours which have been embedded into ones being/unconscious – behaviours that have been repeated – and thus have become ‘automatic’ for an individual – requiring very little thought.

GOOD HEALTH & HABITS

When an individual is ready – s/he may choose to consciously create ‘good habits’ – ‘actions’ and/or ‘behaviours’ that at first may be difficult to ‘cultivate,’ but if practiced enough, over time, will become embedded into your 'way of being.'

It is important to remember that you are responsible for creating your life/reality – and if there is something that you do not like or desire – it is your 'responsibility' to 'change it' – i.e. 'create' /'cultivate' a more desired outcome.

Forming 'good'/'desirable' habits is a ‘strategic’ way to take charge of your life and health.

CREATING DESIRABLE HABITS

First you must decide what ‘habit’/'behaviour' you would like to ‘create’/ ‘cultivate.’

Secondly, spend time thinking about practical ways to form this habit/behaviour.  'Meditation' can be a useful space to think about such things (a link to the ISIS (I Sit In Silence) Meditation technique has been provided in the 'Lesson Index' at the end of this work.)

Decide when you will ‘practice’ this behaviour – for example – if you have decided that you want to eat more vegetables – you may say to yourself - 'in every meal I eat, I will add an extra spoonful of vegetables.'

Thirdly, you must exercise your ‘Will’ and have the ‘Discipline’ to carry out this 'new behaviour' on a regular basis – this means that regardless of what is happening, you will carry out the task that you have intended.

USEFUL TIP:

When forming new habits – it is important to be realistic – do not over reach yourself by trying to focus on employing lots of changes at one time.

Be patient with yourself and start with small things – forming new habits and behaviours – one thing at a time – step by step.

The most important element of 'creating'/'cultivating' ‘new habits’/'behaviour' - is the ability to 'exercise' your ‘Will’ and having the ‘Discipline’ to stick to it.

Once these two elements are 'mastered' – it can be applied to anything!
